After running your WordPress site for a while, at one point or another, you will have the need to redirect your visitors from one page (site) to another. This can happen for a variety of reasons: either you want to redirect visitors from 404 Error sites or you simply want to reorganize your content so that your high-quality posts and pages and featured and directed to.

For basic users and non-developers, setting up a working redirection path can be quite tricky. That’s why the easiest way to go about it is by using a plugin. When you install a WordPress redirection plugin, you can simply manually type in which page or website you want to redirect your users to with no coding knowledge necessary.

There are many types of redirection. You can learn more about each type of WordPress redirection here.

If you want to utilize redirection on one of your websites, I have prepared a list of the best plugins for WordPress redirection:

1.    301 Redirects – Easy Redirect Manager

As an all-around solution for all problems related to redirecting in WordPress, 301 Redirects developed by WebFactory is definitely one of the best plugins for redirection. Even if you have never done redirection and you don’t even know where to start, you’ll be able to easily set up a redirection path only a couple of seconds after activating it.

With over 60,000 active downloads, 301 Redirects is the most popular WordPress redirection plugin. It also has a high rating of 4.5/5 stars.

When you’re doing redirection in this plugin, you don’t only have to limit yourself to other pages or websites – you can choose to redirect to a custom post type, archive, term archive, or you can set up your own custom URL where your visitors will be taken to.

2.    Redirection

Redirection made by John Godley is also one of the most popular WordPress redirection plugins, which serves to transfer your visitors from 404 errors and buggy pages. You can also use the plugin to discover the 404 errors that are currently present on your site, so you would know where to start from. The best perk about using this plugin compared to others is that it has very developed conditional redirection settings.

For example, you can choose to redirect only users who are logged in or logged out, users who are using a particular browser, according to the user’s IP address and much more. So, this plugin is perfect if you want to set up a more complex redirection with audience segmentation rules. Otherwise, if you’re looking for an ultra-quick way to set up redirection for one of your pages, you can save a lot of time by using some of the other plugins here, because they’re simpler and easier to use.

Redirection plugin has more than 1 million active installs, but with a lower rating than 301 Redirects – Easy Redirect Manager.

3.    WP 404 Auto Redirect to Similar Post

If you want to have a large redirection database, it’s obviously going to be hard to track and manage manually. However, this plugin will allow you to enable automatic redirection of any 404 error page on your website to a post with a similar topic.

The plugin primarily uses post titles, taxonomies and categories to determine which post to redirect to. So, if you want to save time and have a ready-made solution for redirecting your visitors from 404 Error pages, this is definitely a great plugin to do it. There are also options to manually set up redirection points.

4.    SEO Redirection Plugin

SEP Redirection is also one of the simplest ways of setting up and managing your redirects. It’s especially good if you’re thinking about using redirection to boost your SEO, because it also fixes crawl errors in the Google Search Console, helping your search engine rankings along the way.

SEO Redirection has more than 40,000 active installs with an average rating of 4.2. The plugin contains multiple options for redirection, including 301, 302 and 307 redirections. You can apply them manually and redirect your visitors from one of your WordPress posts to another or your homepage.

5.    Equivalent Mobile Redirect Plugin

Having a mobile-optimized website is more important than ever, and the best way to do it is to redirect your mobile visitors to mobile versions of your website and pages. The plugin doesn’t contain any additional options for intra-web redirection, but it’s the best when it comes to redirecting your WordPress site visitors from the general page to the mobile-friendly page.

If you want to make sure that your mobile visitors get the exact same experience that your desktop users enjoy, this is definitely the best plugin to do so.

6.    Easy HTTPS redirection plugin

This plugin doesn’t deal with 404 error pages redirection, but rather makes sure that all of your visitors are going to the HTTPS version of your website. Of course, in order for it to work, you will need to have a working SSL certificate. After you install and activate the plugin, all visitors who try to access an HTTP version of your WordPress site will be automatically directed to HTTPS.

Setting up HTTPS is not a luxury anymore. A proper HTTPS redirect will make sure all of your users get to see the ? icon beside the URL bar on all browsers.

This can do wonders for your SEO because search engines favor sites that are SSL-encrypted.

7. All 404 Redirect to Homepage

If your goal is to redirect all of your 404 error pages to your homepage, this is the plugin to do it. However, you will not have the same options available as in some of the other plugins, since this one is designed specifically for that.

But, if you want to redirect to your homepage exclusively and use redirection only as a means of managing 404 error pages, this is the simplest and easiest way that you can do it because you won’t get lost in any of the other options and features the other plugins have.

Summary

Depending on what you want to achieve with your redirections, there are many plugins out there that can help you set them up quickly and easily. As we have mentioned, there are specialized plugins for redirecting to HTTPS pages or mobile-friendly versions of your website, but we have decided to give our best ratings to those plugins that offer an all-around solution to all problems related to redirection.

And the best part – they’re all free. You can simply hop over to the WordPress library or choose one of the plugins that we have featured, download, install and activate them and have them set up ready in a matter of minutes. After a while, you should start noticing a positive change in your search engine rankings and visitor behavior (lower bounce rate, longer average time spent on site, etc.)
