Content curation

For those who may not be familiar with the term, simply, content curation is collecting top-quality relevant contents from the web and sharing it with your audience in different formats.

That means, at first, you conduct keyword research and find a specific keyword or key phrase to target. Then, you find the top-ranking pieces of content for that keyword and create a new piece of content that’s way better than all those pieces put together.

So, in short, content curation is the act of choosing, collecting, packaging, and sharing content from around the web. But remember one thing, when you want to curate content never compromise the quality.

What Are the Key Benefits of Content Curation

Benefits of content curation

The number of inbound marketing business is growing crazy over time. More inbound marketing business means more contents are available on the web. This leads to a situation often referred to as content saturation.

When every writer has been given the same subject to cover up and they produce different content on that subject, then consumers face difficulties to filter through it and find quality information.

You can solve this promblem by curating contents.

Apart from it, let’s focus on some more beneficial parts of it.

  1. You have the ability to improve your relationship with other sites. So, you should let people know when you mention them in your curation efforts.
  2. You can establish yourself as an industry leader by association. The key is to ensure you’re consistent in curating great content.
  3. You open up new sharing opportunities. The more content you’re sharing, the more chances that others will share it as well.
  4. You can grow your brand by giving more yourself more opportunities to be seen.

Most Effective Content Curation Strategies

The Ultimate Content Curation Guide 2021 (Tips+Tools+Ideas) 12

Content curation has always been an opportunity to attract new traffic to our website. However, it’s not just about copy and share the content with your visitors. Instead, be sure to include your point-of-view or editorial perspective.

To make your work easy, we’re going to share a list of strategies that should be followed every time while curating a content.

  1. Start with Your Audience’s Need
  2. Focus on Your Business Goal
  3. Share Only What Matters
  4. Always Keep an Eye on Your Competitors
  5. Don’t Forget to Put Your Thoughts Before Sharing a Content
  6. Give Proper Credit to the Original Creator
  7. Use Your Social Channels to Share Curated Content
  8. Curate from a Wide Range of Source
  9. Make Curation a Regular Habit

When doing content curation, be discerning, discriminative, and selective. As an editor, curate content with your audience in mind. Focus on their questions, their issues, and what they most value.

Start with Your Audience’s Need

audience need

Audience research is the first step in an effective content marketing plan. It’s also the first step of effective content curation. In order to share valuable content, you have to know who you’re targeting.

The secret of a successful content creator is he knows what his audience needs. You can’t satisfy a thirsty crow with a piece of meat. All it needs is drinkable water. The same thing happens with our audience.

If our audience is craving the SEO link building ideas and you offer them the best SEO plugin, they might not be interested further to visit you.

So, whenever you choose a topic to curate, make sure you have set your target audience. Thus you can communicate with your audience in real-time.

Focus on Your Business Goal

business goal

Consider what direction you want to take in terms of future content when choosing the content you curate. Are you advancing into a new market? Launching a revolutionary tool? Or just looking to gain brand awareness?

I can give you an example. Before launching our “Compare Plugin” feature, we had been doing research on what makes the audience irritated when they choose a plugin from WordPres.org. We found out that people want to compare their chosen plugin with other same kinda plugins so that they could up with the best choice for them.

As WPHive is a WordPress plugin repository site and we want to assist people to choose their preferred plugin easily, that’s why we have come up with this amazing feature. Then we curated numbers of articles on the plugin compare feature. As a result, every day thousands of people have been using this feature nowadays.

So, never be misled. Before focusing on any topic to curate, make sure it’s your goal oriented.

Share Only What Matters

Share what matters

You can’t believe everything you read on the internet. Before you share content with your audience, make sure you understand it. Make sure it’s true. And also be sure the account you’re amplifying is a credible source.

Another point to notice is that you’re sharing valid content with your audience. Never make them frustrated with unnecessary information.

When you curate a content on “Evergreen Content Tips“, there is no need to include the history of the evergreen content in your blog. Instead, you can guide them with evergreen content ideas and tips so that they can be benefited from your blog. And this credibility will force them to keep coming back to your site.

Always Keep an Eye on Your Competitors

Always Keep an Eye on Your Competitors

Competitor analysis has always been a common but effective way to be on the same page with the market dominators. Everyone does it.

We research what our competitors do to make sure we’re not left behind or missing out on an obvious trend.

When you discover which content curation techniques your competitors are using the most, you can do the same to replicate their success. Your competitor’s YouTube videos boring? Add some fun elements to yours.

Spying on your competitors will let you become just as good at curating content as they are. Soon, with time and some practice, you can surpass them in the search engine rankings.

Don’t Forget to Put Your Thoughts Before Sharing a Content

Promote Yourself

People follow you because they want to hear from you. Simply retweeting content or resharing a Facebook post without your opinion is not that helpful to your followers. They want to know what do you think about the resource you shared.

When you reshared content from your social media handler, make sure you have put your thoughts on it. You don’t have to write a lengthy explanation. Just one or two short sentences explaining why you think the content is valuable is great. If you can add your own unique insight, even better.

And in the time of curating content, don’t just copy and share that. It won’t add value but plagiarism. Add your insights with the content that you post from your site every time. Show your logic behind every point of the content so that your readers get confidence in you.

Give Proper Credit to the Original Creator

The Ultimate Content Curation Guide 2021 (Tips+Tools+Ideas) 13

Do you mention the original content creator while curating content on your site? Or, do you mention the author when quoting his statement or statistic?

If no, then it’s time to change this habit. Imagine someone copied your content without your consent and shared it with his readers without giving you credit for the content. How would you feel?

If you share anyone else’s content without giving his proper credit for it, he will have the same feelings. So every time when you share other’s content or make a quote, make sure you’ve mentioned them as an original creator.

As we said above, content curation can help build your network, but only if you respect and do right by the original content creators.

Use Your Social Channels to Share Curated Content

Leverage Your Social Channels to Share

Social channels are no longer for social works. We use it for social purposes less but more for marketing and promotion. Everyone who involves with a business does the same thing.

So why won’t you leverage your social channels for marketing purposes! People even survive this tough time through social media. It can help you build relationships with other people in your industry.

At first, create channels in different social platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin, Pinterest, and different forums like Quora. Then start posting your contents on those channels.

It not only helps to grow your follower list, but you will also get potential customers through these social channels.

Curate from a Wide Range of Source

Curate from a wide range of source

One of the key benefits of curating content is that you save the reader time in having to search the web. So, if he needs to search further after reading your content, what’s the meaning of creating such curated content.

It happens because you haven’t studied your topic properly. You should research as many content as possible. And if you’re skeptical, you can always do your own investigation.

It helps you to curate from a wide range of sources. You can also get ideas of how many solutions are there available for a single problem. it automatically enhances your content.

Make Curation a Regular Habit

Make Curation a Regular Habit

Content curation isn’t a one-time job. It’s a continuous process. You can’t get the expected outcome unless you make it a habit. As we’ve seen, new content is published daily, effective content creators need to keep pace with it through regular curation and sharing habits.

Try to curate content at least once per week. It helps to attract visitors to keep coming to your site. As you know there are thousands of competitors around you. So if you fail to produce quality content regularly, there are people who can steal your audience in no time.

make a plan of;

  • Finding new content that may be worth curating.
  • Analyzing that and saving what’s relevant.
  • Finally adding value and commentary, and sharing with the right groups.

That’s how you can keep producing curated content regularly for your audience.

The Ultimate Content Curation Guide 2021 (Tips+Tools+Ideas) 22

In the name of content curation, people sometimes follow ways that should be avoided. Having said that here we have mentioned some of those ways that can’t be ideals to follow.

  1. Content Farming: Content farming is generating large amounts of content that is heavily loaded with keywords. Specifically, this type of content is planned for pickup by search engine algorithms to generate advertising revenue through reader pageviews. This content is not written for a human audience to consume.
  2. Licensed Content: When you pay an author to get their permission to republish their original content entirety on your site, it’s called licensed content. It’s an illegal way to produce content in order to provide a seamless reading experience and keep readers on your site.
  3. Scraping: Scraping happens when you copy content from other websites and publish it on your own site as if it were your own original or licensed content.
  4. Aggregation: Bringing together articles on a similar topic, and grouping them together without adding your own thoughts on it is called aggregation.

So, these are the types that you should avoid while creating curated content. After all, you need to have your own commentary every time when you share and publish content from your blog or social channel.

For example, you have Name and Employee ID in one table and Name and Salary in another, you can easily add them together using VLOOKUP.

Let’s see how VLOOKUP works.

VLOOKUP formula consists of 4 different parameters, LOOKUP_VALUE, TABLE_ARRAY, COL_INDEX_NUM, [RANGE_LOOKUP

  • LOOKUP VALUE is the value you want to look for.
  • TABLE ARRAY is the table where you want the function to look.
  • INDEX NUM is the column number of the information you need.
  • RANGE LOOKUP is used to specify the type of lookup.

Here’s how we started the VLOOKUP. We specified the value we want to look at, which is Johnny in our case. Then we selected the cell where the value Johnny is.

After that, we selected the data which has the birth year related to all the name here. We put in sheet 2.

Then we also selected the column where our desired information is. Which is in B or Column 2 in our case.

Here is the end result. Efficient, right?

Formula: LOOKUP_VALUE, TABLE_ARRAY, COL_INDEX_NUM, [RANGE_LOOKUP

6. LEFT / RIGHT

Remember what CONCATENATE does? Well, the LEFT/RIGHT function does the opposite. With these two functions, you can extract data extract specific text/number from a cell. While the LEFT formula extracts these data from the beginning part, the RIGHT formula does it from the end.

Here’s how you can perform the operation with these functions. Staring with the LEFT function.

And the RIGHT.

Here is the end result.

Formula: =LEFT(cell, length of data to extract from left)

=RIGHT(cell, length of data to extract from right)

7. FIND & REPLACE

FIND & REPLACE! Does it need any extra introduction? With this feature, you can find a specific text or number within a table. Then it replaces all the data that matches your provided term with a new term that you provide.

It can be used to replace large numbers of mistaken data at once. You can also use it to slightly modify a large number of data. No wonder it is used heavily to do data analytics in excel.

Using Find & Replace is quite easy.

But it does give back some good results. You can see that the word Johnny is now replaced with Adam everywhere in the sheet.

8. IF

IF function helps automate decision making. This makes it a very important function for data analysis.

With the IF function, you can make excel do a specific task or show a result based on the outcome of another operation. Let’s see an example of what IF does and how we can automate a decision using this function.

We want to if the birth year is 1996 or not, so we selected ==1996 in the first parameter, and then set the formula to show True if the value is true and False if the value is false.

Here is the result.

Formula: =IF(logical test, value if true, value if false)

9. SUMIF

SUMIF is another excel function that you must learn to start doing data analytics in excel.SUMIF sums up all the number that matches specific criteria.

Let’s say you have many different numbers, but you want to get the sum of a specific number (i.e. 50) of that table. This function will find how many times the number is present on that table and do a sum.

Here’s how it works.

How to Use Important Functions of Data Analytics in Excel and Google Sheets 43

Now we can find the sum of the values that are exactly 1995. Here is the result.

How to Use Important Functions of Data Analytics in Excel and Google Sheets 44

Formula: =SUMIFS(sum range, criteria)

10. COUNTIF

COUNTIF function is almost like the SUMIF. But unlike SUMIF, it does not actually sum-up all the number that matches your criteria. COUNTIF calculates and shows you how many times your desired data is present on the sheet.

The operation of COUNTIF is very straightforward and goes like below.

How to Use Important Functions of Data Analytics in Excel and Google Sheets 45

And now you can exactly how many times 1995 is present in the sheet.

Wrapping Up

The growing demand for data analysis is not a miracle. The application of data analysis is diverse. Despite the emergence of many new data analytics software, excel is still one of the most powerful tools for data analysis.

Learning excel functions is a must for any aspiring data analyst. But you can’t just learn all the functions at once and start data analytics in excel over night.

The right way to learn them is to just start data analysis with some important functions and learn all other functions from time to time when you need them. So, make sure to learn the use of the most important excel functions and get started with your journey of being a data analyst.

Content Marketing Metrics: Tracking the Performance

Content Marketing Metrics to Track the Performance

There are a variety of content marketing metrics and KPIs that are useful in measuring the effectiveness of your content marketing strategy. We are going to classify it into four categories. They are,

  1. User Behaviour
  2. Engagement
  3. SEO Outcome
  4. Company Revenue

Each category consists of a few more sub-categories. We are going to take an in-depth look at those sub-categories. In this article, you will find 17 essential content marketing metrics and learn how you can interpret, analyze, and measure them.

1- User Behaviour

User behavior is a content marketing metric

After publishing your content, it’s important to know how your audience has accepted it. Like, how many of them read it, how much time they spent on your site, their sources, and many more things.

It helps to seal the gap that we usually create as a starter, and improve our content strategy as per the audience demand. So, let’s find out the metrics that can help us to identify the campaign performance.

Pageviews

Our first topic of the user behavior metric is “Pageviews”. With this metric, you will know the total number of times a particular page on your website was visited.

Pageviews can give you a basic understanding of how good your content has performed in comparison with other posts published in the same period. It’s a great metric to gauge which piece of your content is interesting and it helps to identify the type of content you should focus on.

Unique Visitors

Unique Visitors are the most standard measure of how many individuals have viewed your content within a given time frame (typically a 30-day cookie window).

This metric is similar to Pageviews, but it can provide you with more accurate insights on how many new visitors your content attracts. Evaluating the number of unique visitors helps you to determine the scope of your audience.

New & Returning Users

The number of new visitors indicates the number of potential leads, while the number of returning visitors shows if visitors like your content. It is better to have a healthy mix of both. That means, your content can attract new users and retain the old ones.

It can help you to figure out how many people are engaging with your content for the first time, or on a regular basis!

Average Time on Page

Average Time on Page

The average amount of time that a user has spent on a page is a great indication of the quality of traffic on a given page. Compared with similar pages, this metric signals whether users’ needs are being satisfied.

If the average time spent on one blog post is two minutes, and another is six minutes, this gives you a strong indicator of the type of content that your audience most engages with.

Traffic Source

You need to know several points. Like, does the majority of your audience come from search engines, or is your social media strategy stronger than your SEO? Or maybe your brand is already well-known, and you mostly get direct traffic? You’ll get all these answers through the traffic source.

This metric tells you where your traffic is coming from and what channels delivered users to your content. This is so important because it tells you which audiences and channels to focus on.

Bounce Rate

The bounce rate is the ratio of people who leave after visiting the first page they visit to those who go on to other parts of your site. In general, the lower bounce rate, the better. This means that users tend to spend more time on your site. Identify the content with a higher bounce rate, to repurpose or update the original one.

Pages Per Session

A session is a cluster of a user’s interactions with your entire website within a time frame (until 30 minutes of inactivity).

This metric shows if your content is engaging and organized well enough to motivate a visitor to discover another web page. If your blog or website has proper and helpful interlinking (links to posts with more detailed information on the subject), users will be more likely to visit more than one page.

More pages-per-session means more engagement, which means you’re progressing towards your ultimate goal.

2- Engagement

Content engagement

As a WordPress website owner, customer engagement is one of our utmost priorities to increase our site impression. To find out if people are engaging with your content, you’ll need to track how long they’re spending on your site and how many pages they’re visiting in each session.

Obviously, the goal is to keep them on your site as long as possible so they can read more of your content unless of course, you want to funnel them to a sales page as quickly as possible. Let’s check out some of the metrics to measure users’ engagement.

Like, Comment & Share

The number of likes, comments, and social shares of your post demonstrates the level of content engagement. However, a share is more significant than a like because it not only shows that someone found your content interesting but also expanded its reach.

And, a comment is more significant than a share. It takes more time to write a comment than to like or share a post (of course, we are talking about valuable comments). So, if a reader was motivated enough to express his opinion in a comment section, it is often a good sign.

Mention

Mention

If another article partly quotes your content or refers to it as a source, this can be considered as a mention.

Mention is another crucial point of the content marketing metrics. It shows the engagement of your blog post among the readers. So, track the mentions of your content both in social media and other media channels. And, pay special attention to their sentiment, context, and authors.

Email Open Rate

If you send a newsletter of your published blog, you need to identify some important things. Like subscriber growth, opt-outs, spam, and forwards.

Subscriber growth gives you a view of the users that have actively chosen to receive your email content. Unsubscribe or opt-out is after getting your email how many of your subscribers unsubscribe you. And at the same way, many people press the “mark as spam” button if they find anything unusual from your newsletter.

Forwards cannot always be tracked effectively, especially if people email direct links to content or use their email client’s forward button. However, if you incorporate a “send to a friend” button or if they share a link that’s embedded in your email, you can at least capture some of this engagement.

3- SEO Outcome

SEO outcome

Another very clear measurement of the performance of your content strategy is the return on the SEO efforts that you are making.

If the rank of your website has significantly improved, that may likely be due to the efforts that you have been putting into optimizing your site’s content. Investing in content optimization helps your site start showing up organically in search engine result pages and driving organic engagement.

Organic Traffic

Traffic is the lifeblood of online content. If nobody is landing on your website, it doesn’t matter how amazing your blog posts are; nobody will read them and so they won’t be doing you any good.

Organic traffic shows how is the number of people who found your website through a search engine. Low figures may indicate that an article or page was not optimized properly. So to increase organic traffic, you need to pay attention to proper search engine optimization.

Backlink

Regardless of what you’re told, backlinks are more important today than ever before. Even though the practice of how backlinks are achieved and validated has changed, strong backlinks will still serve you well from an SEO point-of-view. As such, you should look as to what kind of sites are linking to you, and how you can ensure that your content is worth citing in the future.

Keyword Ranking

Keyword

Check the performance of your post for your targeted keywords. How many keywords in your content ranking for in the Google top search result? How is this page performing compared to your competitors? These should be all questions being explored while promoting your content campaign. WordPress SEO tools will help you to get this information.

SERP

SERP means Search Engine Result Page. An impression is recorded every time the link to your site page appears in the SERP for a user. SERP rank is the spot Google has placed your site on the SERP. A higher SERP rank is ideal because more users will see your page. Relevant keywords, relevant text, and a quality landing page are the best ways to increase your rank.

4- Company Revenue

company revenue

Company revenue is our final point to check out. To be very frank, throughout the journey from content creating to marketing, our core vision is how it can be helpful for our company. Maybe this revenue can be earned in a short time, but most of the time, it takes time to manage revenue.

So, don’t be hyper. Instead, check the company revenue metrics and wait for getting a positive outcome from your content campaigning.

Conversion Rate

Getting readers on your blog post is a great achievement. But what else are they doing when they’ve finished reading? Are they clicking your links and reading more? Are they signing up for your newsletter? Completing an e-commerce transaction?

For B2B brands, the ultimate conversion is leads or even direct sales. Because few buyers will move from not knowing who you are to buying directly from an amazing article. So B2B brands should track all the way down the buyer journey from lighter conversions like subscriptions or click-throughs to deeper conversions like offer registrations.

ROI

ROI

Return on investment (ROI) is the percentage of revenue that we take from different actions. In this case, it will be the revenue related to the content created by you or your team.

Calculating ROI is very simple. Take the profit of your investment, subtract the cost of the investment, and divide the total by the cost of the investment.

ROI = (Return – Investment)/Investment.

Generating Leads

While email subscriptions may not be at the forefront of everyone’s mind, it’s still an important metric to follow. Those who have opted into a newsletter or email subscription have evidently found value in your content, and wish for more of the same. In this regard, you can use such content as a guideline for future posts.

There is a number of email marketing providers that can bring your email marketing & tracking efforts to the next level.
